NMC's 50th Anniversary Commissions for Distanced Ensemble Digital Broadcast 4:
Nicole Lizée brings her trademark visual and audio style to a new work featuring NMC players filmed from just outside of their windows and doorways.
Distance is embraced as a sonic and visual filter as the sound and image of each performer are recorded through windows, doorframes, mail slots, key holes, and other man-made portals. The ambient noise of the outside world mixes with the cloistered sound of interior spaces muffled by glass. Reflective surfaces distort our visual as well as auditory experience as glare and flare upend our sense of balance and perspective. Scale is inverted as the window becomes a life-size diorama, a physical filmic storyboard frame, or an entrance to another ‘Zone’ (a la Tarkovsky) where unexplained phenomena take place - and extend further still into themes of surveillance and voyeurism.
