Info
This afternoon workshop will take place at the beautiful Evergreen Brick Works and will bring together youth orchestras from across Toronto’s many musical and cultural traditions for a unique collaborative encounter.
Through guided improvisation and the use of visual scores, these young musicians will explore new ways of creating music together, drawing from their diverse backgrounds to engage in meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. SONAXIS invites audiences to drop in and witness the power of music as a universal language - one that transcends genre and origin to foster connection, creativity, and community.
While primarily designed as a youth-focused workshop, community members are welcome to attend as spectators for the public presentation component. The program will conclude with a short public presentation at 3:15PM.

- Community Music Schools of Toronto —Community Music Schools of Toronto is all about kids thriving through music. Community Music Schools of Toronto is a registered charity that gives children and youth a rich and rewarding music and social education, by removing the financial obstacle. For 27 years we have seen that the study of music allows young people to flourish creatively, personally and academically...enriching their lives and future prospects. Our students have access to some of Toronto’s best music teachers and a vast array of musical instruments and options. Our students’ study everything from classical piano, strings, voice, brass, wind and percussion to electronic music, songwriting and recording. They make music with fellow students, faculty and even the odd celebrity and perform all over the city. We also offer countless leadership opportunities through our Youth Committee and mentorship programs and provide employment experience for junior counsellors at our summer music camps. In addition to bringing music to kids in Regent Park and Jane Finch we are also giving a music education to Indigenous students at Wandering Spirit School and young newcomers to Canada.
- Canadian Youth Chinese Orchestra —The Canadian Youth Chinese Orchestra (CYCO) is the youth division of the Canadian Chinese Orchestra (CCO). Founded by CCO’s Artistic Director Amely Zhou, CYCO is an audition-based ensemble dedicated to providing Chinese orchestral training for young musicians under the age of 25. The program nurtures technical skill, cultural understanding, and artistic excellence within a supportive and collaborative environment. Since its establishment, CYCO members have proudly represented the City of Markham on international performance tours in 2018, 2019, and 2025, serving as musical ambassadors and showcasing the vibrancy of Canadian Chinese orchestral culture abroad. CYCO has been invited to perform at prestigious venues including the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, the Markham Theatre, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts. In 2024, the orchestra was featured in the Niagara Symphony Orchestra’s Spotlight Program, further expanding its artistic reach. CYCO has also collaborated with organizations such as Fête Chinoise, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Canadian Sinfonietta Youth Orchestra. CYCO’s national recognition includes placing among the top ten finalists for two consecutive years in the CBC Music Class Challenge. Its members have additionally appeared on TVOkids, CNTV, WOWTV, and OMNI TV for various programs and events. CYCO also fosters leadership and community engagement through its active Student Council, which organizes fundraising initiatives and music activities that support local communities and promote cultural appreciation. Today, CYCO continues to serve as a vibrant platform for like-minded young musicians to grow artistically and achieve excellence in Chinese instrumental music.
