MAKEWAY is our program to support and cultivate the growth of early-career Musical Creators by providing them with the resources and opportunities they need to take their careers to the next level. The program offers a week of rehearsals, workshops, and mentoring culminating in a public showcase concert.

The Future Resonance Festival is NMC’s biannual festival which serves to address and sustain the discourse on curating diversity in contemporary music. A confluence of concerts, lectures, workshops, and discussions, the Festival celebrates the limitless power of music to bring diverse groups together. The main goal is to address the culture of contemporary music so that everyone feels welcome. This involves questioning and providing alternatives to Eurocentric power structures in contemporary music and sound art.

Offers performance opportunities to emerging musicians at the outset of our mainstage concerts. These performances are professionally recorded and supported with mentorship, providing crucial early exposure and documentation.

Brings artists directly into classrooms, introducing students to diverse contemporary practices and demystifying the creative process.

Our Composer-in-Residence Program prioritizes mentorship and support for composers from equity-deserving communities, creating opportunities for artistic growth, professional development, and creative risk-taking. Through this program, composers are commissioned to create new works, with dedicated resources and rehearsal time. These new compositions culminate in world premiere performances on our stages, providing a platform to share their voices with broader audiences.

Our Curator-in-Residence program invites guest composers to share their unique artistic vision with our audiences. By offering a platform to alternative musical perspectives, this initiative broadens enriches our programming with fresh, thought-provoking ideas.

Provides accessible videos that introduce listening strategies for adventurous music, bridging the gap between new works and first-time audiences.

One of our key partnerships is Tapestry Opera’s Women in Musical Leadership program.

Women in Musical Leadership (WML) is a program designed to collectively develop the next generation of women and non-binary conductors and music directors in Canada.

Led by Tapestry Opera, the program addresses a historic gender inequity on the podium by providing women and non-binary conductors active mentorship with leading conductors in the field, deep and varied experience with professional companies and a robust artistic network.

WML allows conductors to assist, observe, conduct, and build experience within various organizations in symphonic, chamber, operatic, and contemporary repertoire. This gives conductors the professional expertise and training that will enable them to take the podium anywhere in the world.
