Paul Griffiths, OBE is a music critic, novelist and librettist who has served on the editorial staff of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, was the chief music critic for The Times and has written extensively for The New Yorker and The New York Times. Griffiths has written the libretti for two 20th century operas, Tan Dun’s Marco Polo and Elliott Carter’s What Next?. On March 4 the Toronto Symphony and renowned Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan will give the North American premiere of let me tell you, Hans Abrahamsen’s orchestral song cycle based on Griffiths’ novel of the same name.
“An Evening with Paul Griffiths” will be an intimate affair at which he will discuss his collaboration on What Next? with excerpts from the Tanglewood production. Several signed copies of a collection of Griffiths’ musical criticism, The Substance of Things Heard will be among the raffle prizes available, along with copies of CDs and DVDs of the opera. Tickets for the event are $100 (2 for $150) and include door prizes, gourmet delights and libations with proceeds to benefit New Music Concerts. A charitable receipt will be issued for the CRA allowable portion.
